By the time I get down to painting the tables in the front of Old Town Coffee in Kapaa, Ben’s cup a joe will be quite cold. But since his is an alternate reality where things never really heat up or cool down except in the eye of the beholder, I guess he won’t mind.
Now this post fits into the “factoids you will most likely forget in ten minutes” category but what the hey. You get what you pay for.
Just where did the phrase ” cup of joe ” come from? For those of you who have been kept awake at night trying to figure that out, here is your salvation:
— Josephus Daniels (18621948) was appointed Secretary of the U.S. Navy by President Woodrow Wilson in 1913. Among his numerous reforms of the Navy was the abolition of the officers wine mess. From that time on, the strongest drink aboard navy ships was coffee and over the years, a cup of coffee became known as “a cup of Joe”.
